Free Flight wines are produced by a “moonlighting” winemaker who is the Cellar Master for a well-known winery but who is allowed to produce a limited amount of wine under his own label. The name Free Flight was inspired by the artwork depicted on the label and reflects his dedication to winemaking creativity.
A blend of Chardonnay, Colombard, and Chenin Blanc that creates a distinctive dry white wine. Delicate aromas of citrus blossom introduce deliciously vibrant peach, pear and apple flavors that are carried through a round, lush mouth feel by a naturally refreshing acidity and minerality. The name Three Coins comes from the family’s rich history of gold prospecting in Alaska. Today, Betsy and David Lawler grow super premium Syrah, Viognier, and Petite Sirah (and will soon plant Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot), on their 106-acre estate. Their vineyards are nestled in a private valley just outside of Calistoga in the Knights Valley appellation.
The winemaker at Three Coins, Larry Levin, added gold medals for the single vineyard Three Coins Viognier and Syrah to his long list of gold medals, earned while at Franciscan Estate, Mt. Veeder and Icon Estates. The newly released 2010 Viognier follows the widely acclaimed and sold out 2009 vintage.
This selection is a decadently rich and bright wine with tones of honeydew melon, apricot, honey and kiwi. The flavors seem to go on forever, ending on a clean, fresh note that makes a memorable statement when served with Asian or Indian dishes, especially curries, roast chicken, pork, duck, veal, and smoked seafood.
