A claret style Zinfandel with full, jammy flavors of blackberry, raspberry, black cherry and wild berry flavors with a hint of black pepper and anise. A nice touch of acidity makes a clean, food friendly finish. Our expert wine panel enjoyed it from appetizers through to dessert and wished they had more.
After two solid days tasting Zinfandels at the annual ZAP festival in San Francisco (the largest gathering of Zinfandel winemakers and enthusiasts in the world), this wine captured our attention immediately – unpretentious, understated and easy drinking. Aromas focus on sweet berry and licorice. Delicate fruit flavors complement the aromas while gentle tannins permit the flavors to shine through a nicely structured texture.
This exquisite wine’s richness and full body will make a perfect choice to accompany strongly flavored, full-bodied dishes, particularly those that are braised, grilled or smoked. Blackberry, raspberry and smoky pepper flavors are nicely balanced with layers of spicy clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Fruit flavors are structured against nuances of spice, cedar and vanilla. The winery’s lean, rocky, hillside vineyard typically yields small crops of Zinfandel with intense flavors and aromas, and this is no exception.
Coming to us from some of the oldest Zinfandel plantings in California, the Sierra Trails Old Vine Zinfandel is a complex wine offering aromas of ripe berry, dried plum and red currants. These remarkable fragrances are echoed in the flavoring where a hint tobacco, black pepper spice and sweet oak lifts the fruit and carry them through a lingering finish.
