Tasting Notes
Winemaking is an art that’s as old as time itself, but with the advent of the airliner the art form saw a worldwide renaissance. As winemakers began visiting their international counterparts with greater frequency, styles began to blend across international boundaries and a new brand of winemaker was born. The so-called “flying winemaker” was a new breed of character in the viticulture game, attempting to incorporate foreign tactics into their traditional regional practices. Although usually associated with Australian winemakers, here’s an California take on the tradition.

The 2011 Spencer Reserve Cask Red is a west coast take on a popular French blend. Thick, but nimble, takes you on a bit of a journey. “Easiest trip between California and France I’ve ever taken,” one of our expert winemakers commented, placing her glass down. “This is a truly international delight.” She quickly turned to race the rest of the panel to the barbecue.
Varietal Notes
This red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah that is the most popular blend from the Provence region of France. The Cabernet gives the blend it’s structure, while the Grenache and Syrah offer a red and black fruit flavoring that’s deliciously smooth. This is a blend that’s becoming increasingly popular worldwide and this one comes with a particularly exciting west coast twist.
Winemaker Notes
An abundant harvest allowed this rock star winemaker, whose wines normally sell out at $30+ a bottle, to create this robust beauty at a friends and family, back door price. Here old world refined classics get a fruit boost from new world Cabernet Sauvignon. A very happy marriage.
Food Pairing Notes

Wonderful all around red table wine. Good to pair with lighter fare as well as traditional red wine dishes.

This wine is a great "find"! Rich, juicy with distinct cherry and blackberry notes and a round, robust character, every person at the table was impressed and wanted more. I've ordered a case and may order another for holiday gifts for wine-loving friends! Much more than expected from its "table wine" designation!

I'd actually put that closer to a 4.5 as this wine caught me just about right, suprisingly light and delicious. Absolutely perfect for a hot spring evening BBQ or any other time. bc
