Just seeing the word Alba makes us excited. Known as the gourmet capital of Italy, many things come from Alba that bring us tremendous joy. White truffles, savory cheeses, homemade pastas, roasted meats that make our mouths water, and exquisite wines to go with it all. From Alba, we turn to Dolcetto to enjoy for a nightly meal. Known as the “Shy” Italian, it drinks one way, simply to be enjoyed. It is not like its sister variety, Nebbiolo, which is far too complex and requires too much thought and attention. Here, you can enjoy wines from Alba, especially Dolcetto, for what it is, a great wine to enjoy, now. What to expect from Dolcetto? It simply drinks beautifully when paired with anything with tomatoes. Even though Dolcetto means ‘little sweet one’: this wine is dry and definitely not little. Flavors of blackberry and boysenberry flow through its velvety mouthfeel with a firm finish.

The lands of Asti are located between Milan and Genoa in the Italian Northwest. A leisurely drive between the two takes you through lands lined with vineyards, rolling hills, and some of the world’s best wines and cuisine. It is here where they make the Asti wines of Dolcetto, Moscato, Brachetto, and  most importantly, Barbera. Known all over the world, the Barbera made here is second to none. An elegant wine that is full and dry, its tannins hold a firm grip, bringing along full ripe red berry flavors. Although Barbera can be aged, it has a tenacious youthful nature that we love and enjoy at the young stages of its bottle life.

Chianti is a wine region inside Tuscany in Central Italy. If you don’t know it by name, you might know it by its reputation. I’m not talking about the wine you get in neighborhood Italian restaurants with the woven baskets caressing the bottles. I’m talking about Chianti in all its glory, the Chianti region that makes wines that rival the best in the world. Val Di Botte Chianti is 85% Sangiovese and a blend of Canaiolo Nero and Cabernet Sauvignon. The results of this blend are intense, but refined, with flavors of wild berries and spicy notes intertwining. This fruity, spicy, slightly smoky, and generally pleasant red wine is a delight to have at the dinner table. It's versatile with food, getting along with everything from cheese and charcuterie, hearty pastas, pizza, and meat and fish dishes in the Tuscan style.

The region of Puglia makes up the “heel” and “back of the boot” region of Italy. It is here that the Sangiovese grapes share much of the spotlight like it does in Tuscany. With unlimited coastal access, the warm Southern Italian sun and cool breezes throughout the day and night, produce balanced grapes that have big fruit and light. This combination is perfect for the acids of the tomato-centric cuisine of Puglia. Pastas, pizza, you name it. It works well. Val di botte Sangiovese flaunts flavors of red currant, raspberry, and aromatics reminiscent of potpourri and elements of clay. We recommend decanting for 30 minutes or so to lets the flavors evolve.

Italy is home to almost 350 different wine grape varieties, giving wine lovers a plethora of styles to choose from. One of our favorites, Nero d’Avola from Sicily has found a home in our cellar. These wines are bold in nature. After all, Nero d’Avola also is known as the “Black Grape of Avola.” When crafted well like the Della Flora Nero d’Avola, they yield a bold wine with lots of dark blackberry fruits, plum, sweet and smoky nuances and hints of spice. This combination in perfect harmony is a blessing on our palates with its smooth and sultry finish. Enjoy this wine with hearty stews, gamy meats, and our favorite, bacon buffalo cheeseburgers.
