Vinum Chenin Blanc
Vinum Africa is a winery that loves a challenge. So when they looked at Chenin Blanc, the former “ugly duckling” of Stellenbosch, they knew they could make great wine from the oft neglected grape. Once again, they stepped up and performed beautifully. After a single sniff one can already sense the elegance and vibrancy it possesses. The notes of white petals and crisp citrus are sure to excite. The palate has layers of fresh lime and gentle spices all underscored by fruit. The wine finishes with a refreshing minerality the lets the fruit resonate. This Chenin Blanc is highly versatile and may go best with somewhat exotic cuisine—Thai or Indian, perhaps?
Granite Ridge Pinotage
Pinotage has an interesting history. Originating as a genetically engineered hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known as Hermitage in South Africa, thus the name), it came into existence back in the 1920s. Thinking the hybrid would make very good wine, the initial results were not good. If mishandled, Pinotage can make a wine that has notes of acetone, certainly not something anyone would think to drink. However, when handled well, it can make a truly unique light red wine. And if anyone in South Africa would know how to handle a grape, it would be Alex Dale and the Winery of Good Hope. Their work with the grape is a total success. It truly brings out the aspects of both of the parents of Pinotage. It has notes of cherry from Pinot Noir and some spiciness from the Cinsault. Equally important, Alex avoids anything that reminds someone of the bad parts of Pinotage. Part of this was using a very light crush and it was delicious. You'll taste some red cherries, violets and a nice juicy palate with balance, length and a bit of funky spice. Enjoy slightly chilled and you will easily able to drink a whole bottle.
Granite Ridge Reserve Pinot Noir
Granite Ridge Pinot Noir has beautiful cherry and cranberry like flavors, hints of herbaceous notes, with an elegant, low acid mouth feel and a delight finish. You can pair this red wine with a variety of foods like white pizza with fresh herbs, grilled fish, and spiced poultry, just to name a few.
Granite Ridge Chardonnay
South Africa and Chardonnay aren't usually associated together, but they really should be. The beautiful simplicity of this wine is a refreshing reason why South African wines should be savored. It's vibrant, that's for sure. It has enough acidity to cut through the creamy shellfish pasta dishes we love. And its silky and balanced mouthfeel make grilled salmon its perfect complement. Flavors of pear, apple, with hints of pineapple, justly make this wine a sheer delight. This is destined to be one of your new favorites.
